How to Prepare for Your Photography Session
There’s a line I’ve repeated for years, on our Instagram and to anyone who will listen: amateurs worry about equipment, professionals worry about being properly prepared. Preparation is one of the more important steps in photography, because some moments only happen once. You’re not going to tell a bride and groom to redo that kiss. You can’t ask an athlete to make that play again. You lose that moment, you lose that moment.
So this guide covers both sides of a session with Pottinger Studios: the preparation happening on my end that you never see, and the handful of simple things you can do on your end. None of it is complicated, and all of it shows up in the final photos.
The preparation you never see
By the time you’re in front of my lens, most of my work has already happened. The most important part is the research. We’ll have had a real conversation, by phone, text, or email, to make sure we’re on the same page about what you want. Then we lock down the basics: date, location, how the images will be used.
After that, I hold myself to a standard I’ve described as first-date level preparation. The way I present myself, the way I communicate leading up to the day, all of it matters. When I’m there, my job is to be attentive, be compassionate, be thorough, and (I repeat this to myself often) do not be annoying. Not everyone has the same level of experience in front of a camera, so I prepare by showing folks the respect required to make them feel comfortable.
The practical side gets the same attention. Gear charged, cleaned, and checked the night before. Memory cards formatted. The right equipment for the specific shots we planned. And I show up on time, if not earlier. I’ll even admit to a small pre-shoot ritual, a half-joking little prayer for true focus, true aim, and a shutter that always triggers when I need it to. Whatever works, right?
The mistake that taught me all of this
Early in every photographer’s journey there’s a shoot they showed up to unprepared, and a shot they missed because of it. It happens more often than you’d think. A card that wasn’t formatted, a battery that wasn’t charged, the wrong lens for the moment. We’ll have hundreds, thousands of successful captures, but the one we missed because we were unprepared lingers for a long time.
That feeling is exactly why the checklist above exists. When you book photography services, part of what you’re paying for is that the missed-shot lesson was learned a long time ago, on someone else’s watch, and it doesn’t get repeated on yours.
What you can do before your session
Your side of the preparation is much shorter, and none of it requires practice in a mirror:
- Answer the pre-session questions honestly. When we talk beforehand, tell me what you actually want, what you’re nervous about, and how you plan to use the photos. Uncertainty creates tension, and the conversation is how we remove it.
- Choose clothes you already feel good in. The outfit you get compliments on beats the brand-new one you’ve never worn. Solid colors photograph better than busy patterns, and a backup look takes the pressure off.
- Take care of yourself the night before. Sleep and water show up on camera. Skip anything experimental in the final 48 hours, especially haircuts and new skincare.
- Give yourself a time buffer. Arriving a few minutes early means the first frames happen when you’re settled, not rushed. The warm-up minutes of a session matter.
- Leave the logistics to me. Locations, permits, backup plans for weather and light are my job. If you have a spot in mind, tell me and I’ll scout it properly.
The conversation is the most important step
If you only do one thing from this guide, do this: talk to me before the session. Individual headshot sessions run 30 to 60 minutes, and the ones that produce the best images are always the ones where the client and I walked in with a shared plan. The same goes for a family session or a corporate event with dozens of people to photograph. Preparation is what makes the day feel easy, and when the day feels easy, it shows in every frame.
