The Quinceañera We Didn't Plan to Photograph

Lisa and I were already out on location for a photo shoot when I noticed a family nearby, helping who I assumed was their daughter into a rather extravagant gown. We went on with our shoot far away from them and thought nothing of it.

When we circled back to the area where we’d first seen the family, I noticed something odd. There was no photographer working with that group. A young woman in a full quinceañera dress, her whole family around her, and nobody behind a camera.

That’s when the mother approached me and asked, would you be able to photograph our daughter in her quinceañera dress? Our photographer just couldn’t make it.

Saying yes with no plan

I looked at Lisa to see if that was okay, and she graciously stepped aside to let me help this family. (Lisa, if you’re reading this, you’re the real hero of this story.)

For anyone who doesn’t know, a quinceañera celebrates an important milestone in a young woman’s life. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime day. Normally I would have had a conversation with the family ahead of time to set expectations, go over the shot list, and scout the light. That day, preparation took a backseat to improvisation.

So I reached back to my days working as a wedding photographer. On a milestone shoot, every detail tells part of the story: the elegant dress, the carefully chosen accessories, the location, the styling. But details alone don’t make the photos. I wanted to make sure the daughter was telling her own story, not just standing in a pretty dress.

The shots that mattered

We captured the mother helping her daughter with her gown, which is the kind of quiet moment families treasure more than any posed portrait. The daughter wanted shots with her dog, to show how much she adores him, so the dog got his session too. I had her dad help her up off the ground so that moment between them was in the set. And she and her friend even recreated the scene from Titanic. You know the one.

For a completely unplanned shoot, it went well. The family was wonderful and extremely thankful, and I got to be part of a day they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

The part that still gets me

Here’s the detail I keep coming back to. Lisa and I had originally planned our shoot for a week earlier, and we had to reschedule. Had we not rescheduled, I would not have been standing there when that family needed someone. Luck is just as important a part of this art form as preparation. The preparation is what let me say yes with confidence, but the luck is what put me there at all.

And don’t worry, Lisa and I still got our shots.

What this means if you’re planning your own milestone day

Two takeaways from that afternoon, one for photographers and one for families.

For photographers: your experience travels with you. Every wedding, every family session, every event you’ve ever shot is in the bag next to your camera, and someday a stranger’s once-in-a-lifetime moment will depend on it.

For families: have a backup plan for your photographer, confirm the details the week of, and if the worst happens anyway, ask the person with the camera. You might catch someone like me on a lucky day.
